Private tours: guide vs self, decided by math

A private guide is not a luxury purchase. It's a purchase of time, access, and not getting lost. Sometimes it's worth every won; sometimes a group tour + subway beats it. Here's how to tell. ⚠ Bands below are indicative — price data being verified.

1. Fair price bands (per group, not per person)

Private-tour pricing is per group. A ₩400,000 guide for 6 people is ₩67,000 each — cheaper per person than a ₩90,000 group tour. Always divide by your headcount before comparing.

ItemFair bandWhat to know
Private English guide, full day (~8 hrs, guide only)₩250,000–450,000 / groupGuide fee only. Transport, entry fees, meals usually extra.
Private English guide, half day (~4 hrs, guide only)₩150,000–280,000 / groupOne palace + one neighbourhood. Not a full-day itinerary.
DMZ private tour (up to ~4 people)₩400,000–700,000 / groupPrivate vehicle + guide. Group DMZ tours: ₩60,000–90,000 per person (price-checked).
Private day trip: Nami / Suwon / Jeonju₩350,000–650,000 / groupVehicle + driver/guide. Entry fees + meals usually extra.
Private van, airport → hotel₩100,000–170,000 / vehicleUp to ~6–7 passengers + luggage, tolls included.

2. The decision rule

  • Book private when: (a) your group is 4+ — per-person cost drops below group tours; (b) someone in the group has limited mobility, kids, or a tight schedule — the guide absorbs all friction; (c) the site is access-controlled (DMZ) or logistically hard (a day trip with 3 transfers); (d) you want a custom pace — photography, food, history depth.
  • Go self / group when: (a) the route is one subway line + walking (palaces, Bukchon, Insadong); (b) your group is 1–2 and the per-person private cost is 3–4× the group tour; (c) the experience is the same regardless of guide (a cruise, a tower observatory).
  • The hybrid that usually wins: private guide for Day 1 (orientation + palaces + how the city works), self-guided for the rest. You buy the learning curve once, then use it all trip.

3. "Guide only" — read the inclusions line by line

Most disappointment comes from one phrase: "guide only." It means you pay the guide, and separately pay for: the vehicle / driver, entry tickets, meals, and sometimes the guide's own meals and entry. Before you book, get a written answer to: vehicle included? driver separate? entry fees included? lunch included? pickup included? A ₩300,000 "guide only" day with a ₩150,000 van + ₩50,000 in entries is a ₩500,000 day. Compare the all-in number, not the headline.

4. DMZ: private vs group

Group DMZ tours (₩60,000–90,000 per person, price-checked) are the default for a reason: fixed schedule, shared transport, no planning. Go private when: your group is 4+ (per-person cost converges), you want a flexible schedule, or you need pickup from a specific hotel. Note: DMZ tours can be suspended for security or weather reasons — private bookings are not exempt. Ask about the reschedule / refund terms in writing before paying, and bring your passport (required).

5. The 5 questions to ask before you book

  1. What is the all-in price? Guide + vehicle + driver + entries + meals + pickup. Get it in one number.
  2. Who is the guide? Licensed guide? English fluency? Ask for the guide's name and a recent review in your language.
  3. What is the cancellation policy? DMZ suspensions, rain, illness — what happens to your money in each case?
  4. What is the pace? Number of stops + time at each. A "10-stop day" is a driving day, not a sightseeing day.
  5. How do I pay? Card, cash, platform? Never pay the full amount by untraceable transfer to a stranger. Platform or hotel-concierge bookings leave a paper trail.

6. Booking path

Three routes, in order of certainty: (1) your hotel concierge — highest certainty, highest price, best for DMZ / same-week bookings; (2) established booking platforms (Viator / Klook private-tour listings) — reviews, cancellation terms, card payment; (3) direct with a guide — best price, most diligence required (verify license, reviews, written terms). If a deal is far below the band above, ask why — the most common reason is "guide only" hiding the real cost, or a guide who isn't licensed.
