A 5-star badge doesn't tell you what you bought. The band, the area, and six booking questions do. ⚠ Bands below are indicative — price data being verified. Check the live rate before booking.
1. Fair price bands (per night, room only)
Room-only means what it says: breakfast, taxes, and service fees are usually extra — that's where most "why is the bill higher?" surprises come from. Bands are for central Seoul, standard rooms, normal dates. Peak dates (late-October foliage, holidays, major events) run above the band; February weekdays often run below it.
2. Where to stay: area × traveler
Area matters more than star count. The wrong area costs you an hour a day — for a 3-day trip, that's 12% of your trip gone to transfers.
- Myeongdong / Jongno (first-timers, families, shoppers): palaces, shopping, airport bus routes, most English support. Busiest at night; ask for a high-floor / quiet-side room.
- Gangnam (business, dining, late nights): business hotels, best restaurants, subway hub. Longest airport transfer — budget 70+ minutes by road.
- Jongno / Gwanghwamun (palaces, quiet luxury): closest to Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon, Insadong. Quieter, more "Seoul" than "downtown anywhere."
- Hannam / Itaewon (expat dining, villas, halal options): international restaurants, more halal-friendly dining nearby, hillier streets — check the walk to the station.
- Hongdae (young, nightlife): great energy, wrong fit for most premium trips — noise, small rooms, longer to the palaces.
3. The 6 booking questions (ask before you pay)
- Breakfast included? If not, add ~₩25,000–45,000 per person per day to compare honestly.
- Taxes & fees included? A rate that excludes 10% tax + service fee is not the rate you pay.
- Cancellation terms? Non-refundable locks you in; flexible costs ~10–15% more — on peak dates, flexible is usually worth it.
- Early check-in / late check-out? After a morning arrival, a guaranteed early check-in can be worth more than a cheaper room you can't enter until 15:00.
- Airport transfer? Hotel cars cost more than a taxi but remove all arrival friction. Compare against the private-van band (₩100,000–170,000) in Premium Price Check.
- Room specifics? Bed type (not "double or twin, subject to availability"), floor, view, quiet side. In Seoul, "city view" can mean a wall.
4. When a premium room is worth it — and when it isn't
Worth it: arrival day after a long-haul flight (sleep quality = day 1 of your trip); a trip with one base and daily outings (the room is your recovery); business trips where a bad night costs a meeting. Not worth it: a night you arrive at 23:00 and leave at 07:00; a "5-star" rate that buys a badge but strips breakfast, cancellation, and early check-in; any listing whose photos show a room the reviews describe differently — trust the recent reviews over the photos.
5. Booking path
Compare the same room on at least two channels (hotel direct + one booking platform). Direct often matches the platform rate and adds flexible cancellation or breakfast; platforms win on points and price display. Watch for: rate shown without taxes, "member-only" rates that require an account to see the real total, and peak-date rates that quietly exceed the band above. If the quote is far above the band, check the Premium Price Check before you pay.
